Every time that rumors about Matt cheating arise on the internet, it makes me laugh. He can’t be alone with a woman without someone saying he’s cheating on me. But there’s one thing I know, without a doubt, and it’s that Matt would never, ever cheat.

Matt’s relationship with Emily is a close one, and that has never, ever bothered me. He’s closer to her than he is to Peck, Friday, or Reagan, but that’s because she saved his life. She gave up everything she’d ever wanted – a home, a man who loved her, a family – and she walked away from it so she could get the money to pay for Matt’s cancer treatment. He’s alive because she sacrificed everything she held dear for him. So when I see them trending on social media with their heads close together, obviously whispering to one another, it doesn’t bother me. In fact, it makes me happy, because I know without a doubt that he’s taking care of Emily. And she’s taking care of him.

I try to pretend like it doesn’t bother me when Matt goes for his cancer scans, but the truth is that I hold my breath the whole day, until he calls me with the news. He lost his friend Kendra, our three oldest children’s mother and my half-sister, to a second recurrence of cancer. Recurrences have a lower success rate for remission than first occurrences do. We’re all aware of that. I work hard on results day to remain calm when, deep inside, I’m a puddle of mush – a puddle of cringing, shaking mush, while I wait to find out if he’s okay.

When he called me yesterday to tell me the news, I was overjoyed, but I had to act like it was just another occurrence, one that I expected. I think Matt likes that I don’t dwell on it. But I do dwell on it. I dwell on it every day, in my private thoughts. Thank God I don’t have a lot of time for those.

My two oldest, Mellie and Joey, along with Kit, Logan and Emily’s oldest, are putting together a puzzle that they found in the closet. The rest are napping, which is a miracle. They almost never all sleep at the same time. Apparently, Lake Fisher has magical powers. We ran the kids around the lake the whole morning, after a hearty breakfast. Then we fed them lunch, and everyone retired to their cabins. I let them listen to an audiobook, and when I went back into the room to find out why they were all so quiet, they were sound asleep.

Seth is stretched out on the couch, reading a book. Henry had offered to share his cabin with Seth, since Henry was staying in it all by himself, but Seth said he missed his family, and Mellie and Joey miss him more and more every time that he leaves to go back to school. All the kids adore him, but he has a different kind of bond with Mellie and Joey.
